Acceptance to RIT - Part II

by Jan Dvorak Email

So I got accepted to RIT. Great! But there are still things to do. Hence this post...

Follow up:

First you get a bill. Be prepared there will be many of them to pay, but there are worse things.

First thing after acceptance I had to create a computer account at RIT to access the many services. That turned out to be fun for me and I spend great amount of time discovering all that the websites had to offer. On the other side it was a bit chaotic as there are many websites, but there isn't any big central navigation. Always only for certain parts. A bit of jungle I think I now know how to navigate.

Most bothersome for me turned out to be the VISA. First I went there at the end of March and they told me that I was too early and should return in May. Fine, when I returned in late-May they send me back again as they have changed all the forms I needed to fill out (not to mention the rise in fee). Finally on the third attempt in July I was able to get my student VISA. Now I have to hold on to all the papers work around it for the next four years (luckily I have a nice folder where I have everything together).

In mean time I was constantly watching what was happening at RIT. Saw the the hockey team go to Frozen Four and got more and more exited about being part of the community in fall. One of the most important things is housing. As Freshman I was to get housing at the campus (wouldn't like it any other way) so when the time for housing application arrived I was right on it.

Long before the housing application I knew that there was also a special housing opportunities. Special floors of interest aka Special Interest House. RIT has seven of them: Art house, Computer science house, Engineering house, House of general science, International house, Photo house and Unity house.

So I choose to apply to International house and Computer Science house. First because of my interest, second as I though it will be more fun.

Nobody is accepted to these house out of the blue. When you submit your housing form there you have to answer few questions set by the house members. Then they will choose from the applicants who will be accepted and live with them. For the International house there also was a video conference where they gave me few additional questions and got to know me better.

They said that I will know if they accepted me in few days via email. But the mail never came (actually it came, but somehow was lost in matrix so I found out just now about the email - still can't read it though :( ) so I gave up on my hopes of being at the International house. No info from the Computer house either. But I was still happy, because either way, I knew it would be great even in the normal dorm.

As the days went by, I finished my IB with score of 28 so I passed and was certain to go to RIT. I also discovered a group on facebook of my classmates so I began to chat with them. Everybody was excited as all were waiting to see where they are going to live, how will look their schedule and so. In mid-July the departments started to make schedules for us with finalization set in September. Then on July 19th was deadline when we should get to know where and with who we'll living for the next year.

On July 13th I got an email from Housing operations that I was accepted into the International house. I was happy, but did not understood why I didn't received an email earlier. Few minutes later I got my answer. I was also accepted into the Computer house as an off-floor member (I'll have access to the facilities, events, etc. but I won't be living on the floor - I'll be living in the International house, that also means that I have to fulfill my duties in two houses - wish me luck).

Finally on July 19th with everybody anxious about their housing arrangements I too was refreshing like crazy wanting to see who my roommate was. Somehow I wasn't able to access that information till one of my classmates send me a link where everything was displayed.

And that is where I'm right now. More to come!

To be continued...

Hey man I just wanted to say thanks for taking the time to create something worth reading . I am all over the net and I see so much pointless content that is just written for the sake of putting something new on their page. It takes devotion to make good stuff, thanks for caring.
